Katosi Women Development Trust (KWDT) is a registered non profit organization aiming to improve living standards of poor & rural fisher communities in Uganda by empowering them to engage in their development processes.

KWDT is registered under the Non-Governmental Organizations Registration Statute of 1989 S.5914/6911.

Our Approach

KWDT empowers women in rural and fishing communities who face significant social and economic barriers. Recognizing women as critical agents of development, KWDT addresses the challenges that hinder their participation in sustainable growth initiatives. KWDT supports women whose livelihoods are primarily derived from agriculture, fisheries, and micro-businesses—sectors highly vulnerable to climate change and market instability. KWDT challenges restrictive social norms by advocating for women's rights, promoting gender equality, and amplifying their voices in decision-making processes, while also tackling issues such as gender-based violence and limited access to healthcare.

Thematic Areas of Intervention

KWDT intervenes in rural and fisher communities on Economic Empowerment, Access to Water, Sanitation and improvement of Hygiene (WASH), Formal and Non-Formal Education & Environment Conservation through the women’s groups. Health, Gender, Youth & Disability are mainstreamed in all programs.

Group Membership Growth Over the Years

KWDT recognizes women as the entry points of development is currently coordinating 1,235 rural and fisher women organized into 52 groups across three districts: Mukono, and the islands of Kalangala and Buvuma.
