The WASH program is dedicated to increasing access to clean water and improved sanitation in households, communities, and schools, with a focus on women and female youth as key drivers of these interventions. In areas such as islands where conventional water access technologies are challenging, the program employs innovative methods, such as rainwater harvesting and prioritizing borehole construction near schools, to ensure sustainable water supply. The program also enhances maintenance through the training of repair committees and water user groups, fostering self-governance in water management. In sanitation, eco-friendly technologies like ecosan are promoted, along with improved faecal management techniques to encourage latrine use and faecal matter reuse as manure. WASH sensitization efforts are further strengthened through community dialogues, campaigns, and creative methods like music, dance, and sports to promote behavioral change. Capacity building, skilling, and the development of WASH businesses, including faecal treatment centers, are integral to the program’s strategy for sustainable water and sanitation management, with an emphasis on engaging youth and supporting self-advocacy for increased WASH services.
